Java Heritage
About This Tour
Get ready to trade your ordinary calendar for fourteen days of temples, trains, volcanoes, and turquoise rice paddies. Java Heritage is a rolling, west-to-east escapade across Indonesia's cultural heartland โ no backtracking, no rushed connections, just one island unfurling in front of you, city by city, station by station. We start amid the colonial grandeur of Jakarta, wind our way through the misty hills of Bandung, soak up royal Yogyakarta, chase sunrise over an active volcano in Bromo, and land, at last, in Bali's green embrace for a well-earned finale. Think of it less as a checklist and more as a story โ and you're the main character. This is a trip for the curious traveller who likes their history with a side of adventure: overnight trains rattling through rice fields, 3:30am wake-up calls rewarded with volcanic sunrises, hands-on batik workshops, and a farewell dinner under the stars in Ubud. Buckle up โ Java (and Bali) are calling.
Itinerary
Welcome to Indonesia! Your adventure begins the moment you step off the plane and feel that first wave of warm, humid air. But after a long-haul flight, the smartest move isn't to sprint into sightseeing โ today is all about decompressing, no ambitious plans required. Take your time clearing immigration, settle into your hotel, and let your body catch up with the time change. A short stroll or relaxed meal nearby is plenty. The temples, trains, and volcanoes will still be there tomorrow โ tonight is simply about arriving.
Time to dive into Jakarta properly! We head into Kota Tua, the city's atmospheric old town also known as Old Batavia, where Dutch colonial buildings line cobblestone streets and the lively Fatahillah Square hums with street performers and bicycle rentals. From there, we wander to the historic Sunda Kelapa harbour, where wooden Bugis schooners still dock by hand just as they have for generations. In the afternoon, we swing past the towering National Monument (Monas) before visiting the striking Istiqlal Mosque and its neighbour just across the street, Jakarta Cathedral โ two landmarks standing side by side, a quiet nod to the city's diversity.
This morning is deliberately left unhurried โ sleep in a little and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before we head to the station for one of Indonesia's great train journeys, climbing out of the capital into the cooler hills toward Bandung and comfortably skipping Java's legendary traffic. Once in Bandung, check in and head out into the evening. Braga Street, the city's historic Art Deco boulevard, comes alive after dark with cafรฉs, live music, and a buzzing mix of locals and travellers โ the perfect spot for dinner and a proper night out.
oday is entirely yours โ a free day built for slowing down or striking out on your own through Bandung's cafรฉ culture and boutique streets. There's no wrong way to spend it. For a little more adventure, an optional excursion heads south to Kawah Putih, a surreal crater lake shifting between turquoise and milky white, passing rolling tea plantations near Ciwidey along the way โ a refreshing taste of the cool mountain air.
Another gorgeous train day awaits โ arguably the most scenic leg of the whole trip. After breakfast, we board a daytime or afternoon service east to Yogyakarta, Java's cultural and royal heartland, watching the landscape shift from highlands to fertile plains and endless rice terraces along the way. This crossing will take up a good part of the day depending on schedules, but it's a world away from the sterile efficiency of flying. Arrive in the evening and settle into the atmospheric Prawirataman district for the night.
Set your alarm early โ today is dedicated entirely to one of the great wonders of the ancient world. We drive out through the countryside to Borobudur, the largest Buddhist monument on Earth, its stone terraces and hundreds of stupas rising dramatically from the surrounding jungle. Rather than rushing it, we've made this UNESCO site today's undivided focus, with time to climb its nine platforms and study the carvings up close. For those wanting more, an optional visit to Prambanan โ Java's largest Hindu temple complex โ rounds out a full day of ancient wonder.
Today we trade the tour bus for a becak, the traditional pedicab that has ferried locals through Yogyakarta's streets for generations, winding through the old town to the Kraton, the Sultan's Palace, still home to Yogyakarta's royal family, and on to Taman Sari, the ornate former royal water castle. In the afternoon, get hands-on at a local batik workshop, learning this centuries-old technique from skilled artisans. For those with energy to spare, an optional Ramayana ballet performance caps the day beautifully with dance, live gamelan, and dramatic flair.
This morning we climb aboard another train and keep the momentum going east โ tracing a continuous line across Java rather than doubling back, watching the landscape shift gradually from one region to the next. The journey brings us to the cool, mountain-ringed city of Malang. After checking in, spend the afternoon exploring Jodipan, the city's cheerfully rainbow-painted riverside village โ once an unremarkable slum, now a vibrant maze of colour cascading down to the river below.
Set an alarm you'll actually be glad you set. We transfer up into the highlands to Cemara Lawang, perched on the edge of the vast Tengger Caldera, then at 3:30am climb aboard a 4x4 jeep for the ride up to the famous sunrise viewpoint. Watch dawn break over Mount Bromo's smoking crater as it emerges from the mist below โ one of the best sunrises on the planet. Afterwards, we hike across the Sea of Sand to the crater rim itself before a hearty breakfast and the drive on to Surabaya.
After the early start at Bromo, today is a welcome change of pace โ a free day to explore Indonesia's second-largest city entirely at your own rhythm, with no fixed itinerary to follow. Sleep in, wander at leisure, and be sure to sample Surabaya's genuinely excellent and often underrated street food scene, from rujak cingur to countless satay stalls tucked down side streets.
Check out and head to the airport for your short flight to Bali โ one of the most anticipated transitions of the trip. As the plane descends, Java's volcanoes give way to Bali's turquoise coastline. On arrival, transfer inland to Ubud, Bali's cultural and spiritual heart, nestled among jungle ravines and terraced rice fields. Check in and start easing into island time as the final, restorative stretch of the journey begins.
Today delivers the quintessential Bali day. We begin at the Tegalalang rice terraces, with their impossibly photogenic cascading tiers of green, then continue to Tirta Empul, a sacred water temple where you're welcome to join the traditional purification ritual in its holy spring-fed pools. The day continues up to Kintamani, where a dramatic viewpoint overlooks Mount Batur and its volcanic caldera, before winding back through more emerald rice terraces to Ubud โ one of the most visually spectacular days of the whole trip.
With the major sights behind you, today is entirely open. Strap in for white-water rafting down a jungle river, pedal through Ubud's back roads on a cycling tour, or join a hands-on Balinese cooking class starting with a trip to the local market. Whichever you choose, save your appetite for this evening: we'll gather one last time as a group for a farewell dinner, sharing stories and toasting an unforgettable journey across Java and Bali.
Your final morning in paradise โ make the most of it. Depending on your departure time, squeeze in one last rafting run, cycling tour, or cooking class, or simply spend your last hours with a quiet coffee overlooking Ubud's green ravines. When it's time, transfer to the airport for your onward flight. Safe travels, and thank you for adventuring with us โ until next time, Bali!
